From a palm-sized kitten to a magnificent floof.
Rufus is a cream (buff) tabby โ and just about everything about him points to Maine Coon heritage, whether full-blooded or a happy mix. The clues are all there: the lynx-tipped ears, the lion-like ruff around his neck, the enormous plume of a tail, the tufted toes, and a long, water-resistant coat that grew shaggier with every season. Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds and are famously slow to mature, often not reaching full size until three or four years old โ which is exactly why this timeline keeps stretching.
Temperament-wise the type fits too: Maine Coons are nicknamed the "gentle giants" of the cat world โ sociable, playful, talkative, and endlessly curious (see also: climbing the Christmas tree). The pale cream coloring is a diluted version of classic ginger, which is why Rufus reads as soft butterscotch rather than bright orange.
